Iâm going to tell you a secret…
I have always wanted to start a garden.
Part of that *stems* from Meryl Streep in Itâs Complicated (one of my all time favorite movies) in her sun hat picking the juiciest looking tomatoes đ
Canât you just picture me walking out into my backyard, basket (& glass of Sauvignon Blanc) in hand, ready to fill it with the most colorful flowers, herbs, and vegetables?
But whatâs held me back from starting, is the thought of startingâŚ
Itâs so overwhelming!
During a recent cousin playdate, I told my sister in law about my gardening aspirations and asked her to teach me everything she knows
(she always has fresh cut flowers from her garden on her table).
I was fully prepared to whip out my Notes app and take detailed notes about the types of plants, tools I would need, how to treat the soil, etc.
Instead, this is what she told meâŚ
âJust dig an inch or two into the ground, make it a square and throw your seeds in.â
At the confused look on my face, she elaboratedâŚ
âIf I told you everything you need to know to start a massive flower garden, you would be so overwhelmed and you would never start it.
But if you just toss your seeds in and you watch them grow, in six weeks you’re going to have the flowers for your table, which is what you wanted!â đź
đ¤Żđ¤Żđ¤Ż
And I laughed because it seems so ridiculous. But sheâs right!
Not just about the approach to getting into gardening, but when it comes to starting anything new (like marketing your biz like a Modern Agent to sell more houses)
You can get into the nitty gritty and focus on the minute details until youâre blue in the face.
đŁ But the most important thing is just starting! đŁ
That’s why I love this quote from James Clear so much…
âConsistency before intensity. Start small and become the kind of person who shows up every day. Build a new identity. Then increase the intensity.â đ
Honestly, that quote is like the magic key to unlocking everything you needed to know about marketing your business.
And the same is true for social media.
When you approach it with the goal of, âI’m going to be consistentâ, instead of, âIâm going to be perfectâ – that’s when youâll see the results.
Thatâs not to say, thereâs nothing else that goes into it. Like a beautiful garden, it takes pruning, watering, and nurturing.
But the difference between Modern Agents who get results and the rest, is that they master the 3 Câs FIRST before upping the intensity.
The 3 Câs of the Modern Agent Mindset
C: COMMITMENT
The Modern Agent mindset starts off with a reality check.
You have to take a step back and look at the results you want (& then decide what you can realistically commit to, to make it happen!)
How much time can you commit per week (and how much time do you WANT TO commit per week). Start there. Start small!
C: CONSISTENCY
Want to get results in the gym? You have to be consistent.
Want to get results in your marketing? You have to be consistent!
But like I said earlier, consistency doesnât mean jumping in head first and getting overwhelmed to the point where you feel like you canât move forward.
Itâs about starting small. Getting consistent. THEN increasing your intensity.
For example, if your goal were to become a marathon runner. You wouldnât just show up on race day and give it your best shot.
Youâd train, but start small!
First, by going on regular walks. Then increase your pace from walking to a jog.
Next, youâd hire a trainer to learn new exercises to aid in your efforts.
Finally, youâd update your diet to match your new identity as a runner.
And if your goal is to sell more houses using social media, youâd start small too. LikeâŚ
â Posting to stories 5 days per week.
â Commenting on 3 local peoplesâ posts per week.
â Responding to 3 local peoplesâ stories per week.
Then once, youâve got a handle on that – you increase the intensity!
C: CLARITY
Modern Agents who see results, have clarity around who theyâre talking to.
Theyâre not distracted byâŚ
Trends
Vanity metrics
Their number of followers
And they donât need to be, because they know who theyâre trying to attract and what those people want to see!
Here are some questions you can ask yourself (journal prompt style) to get this level of clarity too!
Think of your favorite past clients. What do they have in common?
-What neighborhoods would they want to see more of?
-What local events would they be interested in?
-What are they looking for in their homes?
